Travellers’ Diarrhoea
Travellers’ Diarrhoea
Traveller’s diarrhoea is defined as three or more loose or watery stools per day accompanied by at least one of: fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps or bloody stools. Travellers’ diarrhoea is the most common illness in people travelling from high-income to low-income regions of the world.
Precautionary steps include frequent hand washing, especially after going to the toilet and before preparing/eating food. Alcohol gel can be helpful when hand washing facilities are not available.
Travellers should carry oral rehydration powder, anti-diarrhoeal drugs, and possibly antibiotics when travelling to high-risk areas.
Antibiotic treatment can be considered as standby treatment for those visiting high-risk areas where access to medical care is limited and for adults at high risk of severe illness should they develop travellers’ diarrhoea.
