Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE)
Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE)
Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral infection spread by the bite of an infected tick, which can cause a range of symptoms from a mild and short-lived fever to a severe infection of the central nervous system.
Ticks are found on forest fringes within adjacent grassland, forest glades, riverside meadows and marshland, forest plantations with brushwood and shrubbery. Ticks can also be found in parks and gardens. Travellers to areas where TBE occurs may be at risk when walking, camping or working in woodland.
Travellers should practice bite avoidance methods, check the body for ticks regularly, remove ticks as soon as possible, and seek medical help if unwell within 28 days after a tick bite. TBE vaccine should be considered for travellers at risk and those at occupational risk in risk areas: farmers, forestry workers, soldiers.
