Rabies
Rabies
Rabies is a viral disease transmitted primarily by dogs, bats and other mammals, which can lead to encephalopathy and death. The risk of exposure is increased by certain activities and length of stay. Children are at increased risk as they are less likely to avoid contact with animals and to report a bite, scratch or lick.
Rabies is preventable by avoiding animal bites and scratches, pre-exposure vaccination, good wound management, and appropriate post-exposure treatment.
Rabies vaccination is recommended for travelers planning higher risk activities such as running or cycling, or travel to areas where access to post-exposure treatment and medical care is limited, long-stay travellers, and people at risk due to their work.
