DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio)
DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio)
Tetanus is a vaccine-preventable disease caused by a toxin produced by bacteria. Tetanus spores are found in soil throughout the world. The disease is acquired when material containing these spores, such as soil, contaminates a wound. The toxin released from the bacteria may then attack the nerves of the brain and spinal cord.
Diphtheria is caused by a bacterial infection, transmitted from person-to-person through close physical and respiratory contact. The most common symptoms are mild fever, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, malaise, loss of appetite and hoarseness.
Polio is an infectious viral disease, transmitted via person-to-person contact, affecting the central nervous system and can cause permanent paralysis.
All travellers should be aware of the risk of accidents, thoroughly clean all wounds and seek appropriate medical attention.
DTP Vaccine – a booster dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine is recommended if the last dose was more than 10 years ago, even if five doses of vaccine have been given previously.
